Online Event: "Maddie is online a video cartoon open access resource for schools"
Online Event to present 'Maddie is Online'
We are delighted to invite you to an OneHE Mindsets free live event on 30th March at 4pm that will present 'Maddie is Online', an engaging and fun digital literacy skills cartoon video resource project, funded by the Scottish Library & Information Council. This project aligns closely with the following strategic aims:
- Strategic
Aim 2. Information, Digital Literacy & Digital Creativity
- Strategic Aim 4. Health and Wellbeing (School libraries in Scotland contribute to health literacy, social and mental wellbeing, and provide a safe, trusted space for children and young people to be nurtured).
'Maddie is Online' is
supported by workshops and digital lesson plans and it is aimed for librarians,
teachers and parents/carers, who may lack accessible resources or time to
educate young children about the challenges and opportunities of online
connectivity. See this introduction in video cartoon format: 'Maddie is Online' - About the series

The seminar aims to
offer an overview of the available series and resources (Series 1 Online Resilience and Series 2 Misinformation),
explaining how teachers, librarians and parents can use them in school or at
home. We are also currently developing a new series on copyright and we hope to
have it finished by the end of April. All the series will be accompanied by a
resource booklet. We have already created our first open resources access
booklet for Series 1: https://www.slideshare.net/martzoukou/maddie-is-online-series-1-booklet-with-resources-244677681 and
we are currently developing the one for Series 2 Misinformation.
'Maddie is Online' can
be used in different subjects (Personal and Social Education, English, Computing,
Health and Well-being) at school or at home in an accessible way, empowering
young people with skills that help them deal with challenging phenomena in
their digital lives. We have developed the cartoon for children between 9-12
years old to appeal to preteens, who are increasingly more connected online
from a young age. Of course, the level of young people's maturity with the online
environment differs from one individual to another but we believe that these
resources are suitable for both the latter stages of primary school and the early stages of secondary school.
Following a community
spirit, there is also a version of the booklet on Canva for you to add
to if you come across a new interesting resource.
Whether you are a
librarian, a teacher, a parent/guardian or someone who is involved with the
education of young people or information and digital literacy curriculum design
in schools or an academic who is interested in the themes from the perspective
of the teacher curriculum, or a researcher and policy maker in this area, we
look forward to meeting you in this event!
