Description of activity

Since 2022, the Albert & Aliki Modiano Library at Anatolia College Elementary Schol has been running "Maddie is Online" Series 5 Misinformation during Grade 5 Information Literacy sessions. Around 320 students have taken part so far with about 80 students each year split into three groups. Each group attends three 40-minute sessions a year, making it 12 sessions in total. Elementary librarians, E. Kompouri and E. Filippidou, have taught the students and contributed to this feedback.

Teaching Approach

Because time was limited during our presentations, we could not show the full videos. Instead, we picked out key clips from every video narrating the start and in between sections so we could cover the main story and hit our goals without leaving any video out. We also paused the videos at key points to hold short discussions and make sure the students fully understood the material. The full videos are shared on the VLE of the school.

At the end of each session, we led quick wrap-up activities, like brainstorming, online quizzes, lead in questions, predictions etc. In the last session, we offer a group activity matching the title with the description of the How to spot fake news poster (IFLA Infographic). Overall, we followed the recommended lesson plans, adjusting the content along the way to fit our students' needs and the time allocated. Teachers are in the sessions and help the process if needed and contribute to discussions.

Benefits

Feedback

The feedback from students and teachers has been really positive. There is a lot of useful content for teachers' and librarian information. It is a rich and well-designed resource, and it is great to have access to it. Everyone found the content interesting and easy to learn from. The plot twist at the end is a huge hit, leading to great conversations about misinformation and how to find reliable sources.

Examples of Feedback Interaction

We also got some helpful feedback on technical details, mainly the suggestion that the graphics could be improved and feedback that some pauses in the videos were a bit longer.
